A lovely cottage between the vineyards in an authentic village Slap in Vipava valley or a house by the sea Savudrija

Dear Intervac members!

We are a travel-loving couple, who love to explore new places. We have grown-up kids and 4 grandchildren, who are all a world travellers but we do not travel together.

1.SLAP
Our cottage in Slap is our second home. It is located at the end of the village, with just vineyards, orchards and hills beyond it. The house is more than a hundred years old and was our dream destination long before we bought it 18 years ago. Slap is a birth village of Tatjana's mother so a lot of her childhood memories are connected with the village and its surroundings. We have renovated the house, but preserved the charm of an old stone cottage. We spend almost all of our weekends here. Friends and family come frequently too, because they enjoy the countryside and cuisine of the area. The cottage has a lovely rose and vegetable garden, orchard, and a place to sit down and relax.

While renovating, we tried to retain the old-times-feeling, yet have added a few modern appliances to simplify everyday life. There is a stove in the kitchen, that we love to cook on, but there is also a gas stove and an electric oven, a dish-washer, and a refrigerator. We have central heating on wood and solar panels for hot water.

There is enough room to comfortably sleep six people. There are two bedrooms with double beds and two single beds on the landing which serves as our library as well. There is a bathroom with toilet, a living room, a boiler room, a working room, and an outside toilet.

Slap village is on the Vipava valley wine route. There are a lot of wine cellars that sell good wine. White wines Pinela and Zelen originate from this region and Zelen is specific only for this region. It is very good to drink over lunch.
There is no store in the village, but there are many in Vipava, a small town three kilometres away, and many more in Ajdovščina a few minutes further away.

Slap is a great base for day-trips. Must-see are Postojna cave, Predjama castle, Idrija with mines UNESCO World Heritage, Škocjan caves UNESCO World Heritage, river Soča, and more… To bath in the see you need to drive for an hour and you'll be in Izola, Piran, or Portorož. You can visit salt pans in Sečovlje and a shell graveyard near Ankaran.

  1. SAVUDRIJA / RAVNA DOLINA Savudrija is 15 kilometers away from the border with Slovenia. It is a pleasant fishing town, with a few restaurants and a shop. Our house is located in Ravna dolina, 2 kilometers from Savudrija, which is a very friendly tourist settlement of detached houses built towards the end of the 1980s. The houses are surrounded by greenery, Mediterranean vegetation, in a peaceful environment where birdsong greets you in the morning. Our house is located 500 m from the sea. We bought it ten years ago and completely renovated it. There are 5 rooms in the house. Two bedrooms, the first with a double bed and the second with a bunk bed for 3 people. Living room with sofa bed. The kitchen is modernly equipped. Bathroom with shower and toilet. Laundry room with toilet. Outside there is a large terrace and a convenient outdoor kitchen and outdoor shower. Around the house there are green areas with Mediterranean vegetation. You can park outside of the garden in front of the fence.

There are several fruit and vegetable growers nearby who offer their products at a stand every day.
Often a seller of fish that he caught in the early hours of the morning drives past the house.

If you want to party, you can visit restaurants in Bašania, Zambratija and Umag. Umag is a pleasant seaside town with concerts, tennis tournaments, many good restaurants and good food.

Savudrija is a starting point for visiting seaside towns in Istria, the most beautiful of which are Poreč Vrsar, Rovinj and Pula. Each boasts history, architecture and good food. From these cities you can take a boat along the Adriatic.

We, Marko and Tatjana, joined this internet community of home-exchangers because we love to travel, explore new places, and meet new friends. We believe that home-exchange gives us the opportunity to live in a place just like the people of that country do. It's a genuine glimpse of life in a foreign country. Tatjana is a primary school teacher and a writer. The house is full of illustrations from her books and magazine articles. Marko is a handy man. He is an electrician by profession, but is familiar with plumbing and all other installations, renovation of windows, furniture…
