Always ready for an exchange ! ! ! |
Welcome to the centre of Western Europe ! Historical vicarage in rural setting near Sint-Truiden, Belgium !
Our house is a picturesque vicarage out of the 18th century which has been completely restored and adapted to modern life.
Ground floor: large entrance hall, large kitchen, bathroom, toilet, 2 dining rooms, 2 living rooms, utility room.
First floor: bathroom and toilet, 5 bedrooms ( 2 with double bed, 1 with twin beds, 2 with single bed ).
There is wifi in the house and garden. We have 3 flatscreen televisions ( kitchen and living rooms).
The garden at the back of the house is very intimate since it's separated from the street by a big wall. It has a small pond with gold fish, a garden house with BBQ and garden furniture and equipment.
In front of the house there is space to enjoy the view of the meadows with Suffolk sheep, a donkey and a pony. There is more garden equipment as well. Our guests don't have to bother about these animals since our son will do this.
Our house is located in a small village near Sint-Truiden, a central point in the euregio Holland-Germany-Belgium .
The region is also known as "Haspengouw". It's Flanders' fruit and vegetable garden. Numerous walking paths as well as cycling routes are there to show the visitor the area's unique landscapes. In spring, the Haspengouw orchards are fully blossoming and offer an unforgettable spectacle to the nature enthusiast's eye. It's the Belgian Tuscany.
The Haspengouw Route, which runs from Sint-Truiden to Tongeren, is the ideal way to discover castles from other times , in different architectural styles. The hottest castle attraction is the Landcommanderij Alden-Biesen, an absolute must. This castle complex counts no less than 11 towers, a castle completely surrounded by water with fortresses serving as its outposts, a guesthouse, a greenhouse and a wonderful garden. In the fructuarium you'll find a collection of old and rare fruit trees.
In the vicinity of Tongeren you'll encounter some peculiar hills. These are tumuli, grave mounts of important people who died during the Gallo-Roman Era. The town also has a great museum on Roman culture as it existed here in earlier times.
Not only the castles, but also the square farmsteads are typical of the sloping Haspengouw scenery. They're generally located in the dales, surrounded by fields as far as the eye can see. The early ones date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
And for children there are quite a lot of well equiped leisure parks : Bokrijk (children's playground + open air museum of Flemish architecture) , Bobbejaanland (the favourite of the Greek family exchanging with us in 1997 and 2004!), Walibi (Brussels), Plopsaland, The Efteling (fairy tales park and attractions Holland).
It takes a 30 minutes' drive to Maastricht (The Netherlands) , 40 minutes to Aachen (Germany) , 20 minutes to Liège, 40 minutes to Brussels and Antwerp and 1 1/2 hours driving to Bruges (Brugge), the Venice of the North and Ghent.

FR2010444Franz and Sonja's home is beautiful and we absolutely loved the exchange. We had great communication with them. They left us detailed information on everything to see and do in their area. The recipe and ingredients for us to make a meal the night we arrived was not only very thoughtful but delicious.
Their home was super clean, tidy and easy to find things. When we returned home we found it immaculate.
We loved exploring Sint Truiden and Tongeren. Durbuy was lovely and all the antique fairs were amazing.
We loved all the coffee shops.
Would definitely recommend a swap with this lovely couple.
