Interested in a trip to the land of the northern lights and the midnight sun?

Tromsø is the biggest city in the northern part of Norway, with 78 000 inhabitants who nearly all understand english. We are also known as the Capital of the Artic… TripAdvisor has named Tromsø as the best place in Europe for experiences, and the third best place to have experiences in the entire world! Even the New York Times named Tromsø a number 10 of 52 must sees globally. For more information about Tromsø city you can watch a 5 minute film here: https://youtu.be/izxchKJi09o?si=wpLMYMoYTl5FUgE4. You can also see what some visitors think about Tromsø and its nature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu7RGLutvcM

There are direct flights from Norway’s capital Oslo several times a day, with a duration of 1h 30 min. During winter there are many flight directly from Tromsø to Europe and elsewhere. Our flat is appr. 8 minutes from the airport by car, 8-10 minutes walk from the city center and 2 minutes walk from the bus stop.

We are a family of 3 that live in a 115 m2 apartment with a nice view towards downtown Tromsø and surroundings. There are 3 bedrooms with a veranda and a garden. Friendly neighbours and a quiet neighborhood. The flat can accommodate six people. The flat holds all modern amenities including Wi-Fi. We can also offer electric bikes if you want to experience a really fun and efficient way to see Tromsø.

We would be very grateful if our exchange partners could look after our cat Pisil. She's very friendly and independent and requires nothing more than dry food and clean water. She loves being petted. However, we can arrange for others to look after her if you want to go away for a couple of days while you stay in Tromsø.

We're open for most destinations during summer, and cities in Europe during winter.
We have had many wonderful exchanges since we we became members of Intervac in 2012, and we are hoping for more satisfying experiences in the future.

Sincerely,
Marit, Øyan and Trym

Tromsø can offer countless opportunities for outdoor activities in an stunning beautifully arctic environment, as well as shopping and indoor attractions within a radius of 0- 10 kilometers. We can also guarantee no heat waves during summer🥵. We are also one of the best places in the world to see the Northern lights and the midnight sun, but we also have many other experiences to offer. First of all is very easy access to our wonderful artic nature with stunning fjords and mountains, but there are much more… We have quite a few direct flights to Europe, especially during winter. Which flights you can see in the pictures.

Among Tromsø’s most popular attractions that are very close to our house are The Arctic Experience center Polaria, The Arctic cathedral and The cable car. We can also offer a short walk from our house to Telegrafbukta beach, where you can barbecue, have a bath and enjoy a spectacular view. Or you can enjoy a hiking trail from Telegrafbukta by the sea towards the city center. Tromsø museum is also close to Telegrafbukta beach and our home. We also have a very beautiful lake that offers a very nice walk a short distance from our home, called Prestvannet.

One of the other experiences we can offer is a closer meeting with the indigenous people of the North- The Sámi. You can get to know their culture through tasting some typical Sámi food, seeing and learning about Sámi artifacts in our museum close by, and of course meet reindeer.

When it comes to outdoor activities during summer ( and winter too) we can recommend hiking in spectacular mountains that range from easy to advanced. At sea Tromsø can offer all from the spa boat Vulkana and kayaking to traditional fishing trips. Or simply a trip to one or more of the beautiful fjords, islands and beaches that sourround Tromsø city. Island hopping from Tromsø is very enjoyable! And most important of all: during the summer the sun never sets. The Midnight Sun's magical light is a unique experience that everyone ought to experience at least once.

Shopping is also very much a possibility, and in addition to the city center Tromsø has one of the countries largest malls called Jekta. Jekta shopping mall is 65.000 square meters and holds a variety of stores. Or if you like a beer from the northernmost brewery in the world Mack brewery arrange beer tasting from their historical brewhouse in the heart of Tromsø. They also have their own Mack’s brewpub Ølhallen, which opened in 1928 and is the oldest pub in Tromsø. For more information about Mack brewery here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9Edy8x9N9M
Tromsø also has a very active night and cultural life in general due to its young poulation. For instance Bukta is the biggest outdoor music festival above the polar circle, and is for 3 days every July.
If you visit Tromsø during the winter it is good to know that CNN praises Tromsø as, not only one of the world's best sites for watching the northern lights (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/11/20/travel/best-northern-lights/), but also one of the ten best cities for a winter vacation (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/11/25/travel/winter-cities/index.html?hpt=hp_c5). We are also interested in shorter home exchanges during the winter time, so feel free to contact us!

For more information about what Tromsø can offer we reccommend to have a look here: https://www.visittromso.no/see-do

If you want to go outside Tromsø you may also visit the Senja. Senja is Norway's second largest island with wild mouintains and beautiful fjords, and is only 50 minutes by car and a short ferry ride away:
https://www.visitsenja.no/en
http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/senja ).

You can also travel by speedboat directly from Tromsø to Harstad city. Harstad is a city 3,5 hours south of Tromsø by boat and is situated on the biggest island in Norway. You can also go there by car. Harstad holds a special part of my ❤️ since it is close to where I grew up, and the city of my childhood. You can read more about Harstad here: https://en.visitharstad.com/

About Our Family

Family of 3, with me Marit and my two teenagers Trym and Øyan. With home exchange we hope to experience the culture more from the inside, thus gaining a deeper understanding. We also feel that this is a better way to travel as a family.

Lifestyle

As I have children we would prefer easy access to shops and some activities for teenagers. Our absolutely favourite exchange location is normally a relatively small town with easy access to a big city. Some sun would also be greatly appreciated, but not a must. We also prefer to use public transportation or bikes, so we prefer to stay close to public transportation.
